What Students Need to Do: Students turn a testable question into a shared plan. They agree on variables, tools, steps, units, roles, and safety, then follow the plan and record repeated measurements in a table.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can help the group choose one factor to change, keep other conditions the same, and write steps another team could repeat. During the test, the student uses tools correctly, completes an assigned role, and records measurements with labels and units.
Common Misconceptions: Students may change several factors at once, measure inconsistently, or record comments such as “went far” instead of numbers with units. They may treat one trial as enough or revise the method midway without noting the change. Some divide the work so completely that no one checks whether the group is following the same plan.
How to Assess It: Give teams two paper helicopter templates and ask which falls more slowly. In 15 minutes, students must assign roles, write a repeatable plan, run three trials per design, and submit a labeled data table.

Lesson moves

In teams, test how ramp height affects a toy car's travel distance, with assigned roles and three trials at each height.
Ask, “What must our group agree on before collecting data, and how will we know each result is trustworthy?”
Play Procedure Relay: groups sequence mixed investigation cards, spot missing steps, then trade plans and test whether another group can follow them.
Compare schoolyard temperatures in sun and shade, then use the class data to recommend where a new bench should go.
