What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students work with a group to turn a question into a fair test. They agree on materials, steps, roles, measurements, and ways to record results, then follow the plan safely.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student contributes ideas, listens to teammates, and completes an assigned role. The group changes only the chosen variable, gathers consistent measurements, and records enough detail for another group to repeat the test.

Common Misconceptions

Students may change several variables, skip repeated trials, or treat a prediction as a result. Some divide the work without sharing decisions, or let one person handle the materials and records.

How to Assess It

Give teams the question, “Which paper towel absorbs the most water?” Have each team submit a plan naming roles, variables, measurements, steps, and three trials.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Teams test which paper bridge design holds the most coins, using assigned roles and one shared data table.

  2. Ask students to write: “What should every team member do before, during, and after an investigation?”

  3. Play Plan Repair: teams find and fix five flaws in a sample investigation plan before conducting it.

  4. Investigate which playground surface dries fastest after rain, then share findings with the staff member who schedules outdoor activities.
