What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a testable question into a short plan with materials, steps, and a way to record results. They follow the plan, use simple tools, and collect counts, measurements, or observations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name what will be tested, keep other conditions the same, and put the steps in order. The student records results in a labeled table or chart and uses them to answer the question.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may change several conditions at once, such as ramp height and car type. They may record guesses instead of observations or measurements. Some students test only once or forget to label what their numbers mean.
How to Assess It
- Give each pair a toy car, a board, two books, and a ruler, then ask which ramp height sends the car farther. Students write three steps, run both tests, and record distances in a table.

Ways to Teach It
Students test which paper towel absorbs most water, using equal sheet sizes and recording the number of spoonfuls held.
Ask how students could find which classroom surface makes a toy car travel farthest, then have them write steps and name the data.
Give teams cards for a question, materials, steps, and data, then race to arrange each investigation in a workable order.
Students compare playground temperatures in sun and shade at the same time, then use the measurements to suggest a cooler recess spot.
