Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students follow a simple teacher-supported plan to answer a question. They observe or measure what happens, repeat the test, and record results with pictures, numbers, or tallies.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given two materials and clear steps, a student can test each one in the same way. The student records each result and uses the data to say what happened.
Common Misconceptions: Students may record what they expected instead of what they observed. They may change several parts of a test, skip repeated trials, or think every test must support their prediction.
How to Assess It: Give each pair a toy car and low and high ramps. Have them release the car from the same point, measure with linking cubes, and record both distances.

Lesson moves

Test which classroom material absorbs five drops of water best, then record each result with a tally or picture.
After testing two ramps, ask, "What did you observe, and which recorded result supports your answer?"
Use picture cards showing investigation steps, then have teams race to place the cards in a workable order.
Compare two paper towel brands using equal water amounts, then choose one for cleaning a classroom spill based on the results.
