What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students define a problem, choose suitable tools and materials, and sketch a workable solution. They build the device, test it against clear criteria, and make changes based on results.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain why each material and tool fits the job. The finished device addresses the stated problem, and the student uses test evidence to explain one improvement.

Common Misconceptions

Students may begin building without identifying the problem or limits. They may choose materials by appearance, use tools incorrectly, or change a design without using test results.

How to Assess It

Give students paper, tape, scissors, and 10 pennies. Ask them to build a platform that holds the pennies at least 5 centimeters above a desk.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Teams use straws, tape, and index cards to build a bridge that holds 20 pennies across a 15-centimeter gap.

  2. Students sketch a device for keeping an ice cube cold, then explain why each chosen material would help.

  3. Run a material match game where students pair design problems with suitable items, such as foil, cardboard, string, or craft sticks.

  4. Examine reusable grocery bags, then design and test handles that can carry three canned goods without tearing.
