What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students define the problem, success criteria, and limits before building. They choose appropriate tools and materials, build safely, test the device, and revise it using test results.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student creates a workable plan and explains each tool and material choice. The student tests the device against clear criteria, records results, and makes a useful change based on evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may start building before defining the problem or choose materials only because they look appealing. They may treat the first failure as final or judge success by appearance instead of test results.
How to Assess It
- Give pairs one sheet of paper, 30 centimeters of tape, and scissors. Ask them to build a freestanding stand that holds a marker 10 centimeters above the desk for 10 seconds.

Ways to Teach It
Build a bridge from 20 craft sticks and masking tape that spans 20 centimeters, then test how many washers it holds.
Write which tool and material choice helped your prototype most, using one observation from the test as evidence.
Play a card-sort relay matching tools, materials, safety steps, and design jobs, then defend one match to the class.
Inspect a grocery bag handle, then build a paper replacement that carries three canned goods for ten steps.
