What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a science idea to make a design choice that solves a stated problem. They set a measurable goal, build a model, test it fairly, and use results to justify a change.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain how each design feature relates to an idea such as force, energy transfer, or motion. They collect useful measurements, compare results with the goal, and revise the design based on evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may build by trial and error without linking choices to science. They may change several features at once, run different tests on each model, or claim success without measurements.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A paper tower must hold 20 washers for 30 seconds. Sketch one feature, name the science idea behind it, and describe a fair test.

Ways to Teach It
Build an index-card bridge between two books, test it with pennies, then revise one feature using evidence from the first test.
Ask students to write which force principle guided their bridge design and cite one test result that supports a change.
