What Students Need to Do: Students connect a science idea to a feature in a designed object or solution. They use test results to explain whether the feature worked and critique explanations for missing evidence or reasoning.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name the science idea, cite specific test evidence, and explain how a design feature helped solve the problem. They can identify weak claims and suggest stronger evidence or reasoning.
Common Misconceptions: Students may list test results without explaining how they support a conclusion. They may treat critique as personal judgment or assume a failed prototype provides no useful evidence.
How to Assess It: Give students this prompt: “A folded index-card bridge held 20 pennies, while a flat card held 6. Explain why the folded design worked better, using evidence.”

Lesson moves

Build two index-card bridges, test each with pennies, and explain how folds changed the weight each bridge held.
Compare two explanations for a tested paper airplane, then underline evidence and circle reasoning that connects the evidence to flight.
