What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify what a device must accomplish and any limits on materials, size, or time. They choose tools and materials, build a model, test it, and make changes based on results.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students build a device that meets the stated goal and follows the limits. They use test results to explain what worked, what failed, and why they changed the design.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose materials because they look interesting rather than because their properties fit the task. They may think finishing the first model means they are done. Some change several features at once, making test results hard to interpret.

How to Assess It

Give each student one index card and 20 centimeters of tape to build a bridge spanning 10 centimeters and holding 10 pennies. Have students record one test result and one useful change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a foil boat, test how many pennies it holds, then change one feature and test it again.

  2. Ask students to write: Which design change improved your device, and what test evidence supports your claim?

  3. Run a material-choice relay where teams match problem cards, such as waterproofing or support, to useful classroom materials.

  4. Have students design a cardboard phone stand for a class video, using size limits and a stability test.
