What Students Need to Do: Students choose the right metric tool and unit for the quantity being measured. They read the scale carefully and record a number with its unit.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can measure length, mass, liquid volume, and temperature with suitable tools. Their readings are accurate, include units, and match the tool’s marked scale.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse mass with volume or choose centimeters for liquid volume. They may start rulers at the edge instead of zero, misread scale intervals, or omit units.
How to Assess It: Set out a pencil, a rock, and 50 mL of water. Ask students to choose a tool, measure each item, and record each result with a metric unit.

Lesson moves

Set up four stations where students measure a pencil, rock, colored water, and warm water using a metric ruler, balance, cylinder, and thermometer.
Show a cup of water and ask students to write which tool and unit they would use for volume, then defend both choices.
Run a card sort matching objects and quantities with meter sticks, balances, graduated cylinders, thermometers, and the correct metric units.
Have students measure 250 mL of water and 20 g of drink mix to prepare a classroom sports drink recipe.
