What Students Need to Do: Students choose a metric tool that matches the quantity and expected size. They measure length, mass, liquid volume, and temperature, then record each value with a metric unit.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student selects a ruler, balance, graduated cylinder, or thermometer without prompting. They read the scale correctly, use the meniscus when needed, and report a reasonable value with units.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse mass with volume or match grams with the wrong tool. They may measure from a ruler's edge instead of zero, read a meniscus from above, or omit units.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Name the tool and metric unit for measuring pencil length, rock mass, water volume, and water temperature. Then read a cylinder with 1 mL marks and a meniscus halfway between 36 and 37.

Lesson moves

Set up stations with a ruler, balance, graduated cylinder, and thermometer, and have pairs measure one labeled item at each station.
Ask students to explain why a graduated cylinder gives a better water volume reading than a beaker.
Play a tool and unit card match, then require each student to defend one match using the quantity being measured.
Have students measure classroom furniture in centimeters and decide whether each piece will fit through a measured doorway.
