What Students Need to Do: Students choose a tool that matches the object and measurement needed. They read the scale correctly, record a metric value with units, and use a microscope scale to estimate specimen size.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students select tools such as a metric ruler, balance, graduated cylinder, thermometer, or microscope without prompting. Their measurements include reasonable precision, correct units, and accurate microscope magnification or size calculations.
Common Misconceptions: Students may mix metric units, read a scale from the wrong starting point, or report more precision than the tool allows. They may also confuse magnification with specimen size or assume a larger image means a larger specimen.
How to Assess It: Give students a leaf, a ruler, and a prepared slide with a scale. Ask them to record one macroscopic and one microscopic measurement with correct metric units.

Lesson moves

Set up stations where students measure a leaf, water sample, soil mass, temperature, and prepared microscope specimen using labeled metric tools.
Ask students to explain which tool and unit they would choose to measure a seed, a bacterial cell, and pond water volume.
Play a matching game using cards showing objects, metric units, measuring tools, and sample readings that students must group correctly.
