What Students Need to Do: Students choose a metric tool that matches the quantity being measured, such as length, mass, volume, or temperature. They read the scale correctly and record a number with the correct metric unit.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student independently selects and uses a ruler, balance, graduated cylinder, or thermometer for a given task. Measurements include units, match the tool’s scale, and are reasonable when repeated.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse mass with weight or use milliliters for mass. They often misread scale intervals, view a meniscus from above, or leave units off recorded measurements.
How to Assess It: Set out a pencil, water in a graduated cylinder, and a rock on a balance. Have students record each measurement with a number and metric unit.

Lesson moves

Set up stations where students measure a book’s length, a rock’s mass, water’s volume, and water’s temperature using metric tools.
Ask students to explain which tool they would use to measure a marble’s diameter, mass, volume, and temperature.
Play a tool-match relay where teams pair measurement cards with rulers, balances, graduated cylinders, thermometers, and correct metric units.
Have students measure ingredients for a sports drink using grams and milliliters, then compare their mixture with the recipe amounts.
