What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a simple question into a short, teacher-guided test. They choose and use rulers, scales, Fahrenheit thermometers, and timers to collect and record measurement data.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name what they will measure, choose a suitable tool, and follow repeatable steps. Their data table shows reasonable readings with inches, feet, ounces, pounds, degrees Fahrenheit, seconds, or minutes.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often begin at the ruler's edge instead of zero, or report a number without a unit. They may confuse ounces with pounds, misread scale marks, or record clock time instead of elapsed time.
How to Assess It
- Set out a pencil, apple, cup of water, and wind-up toy. Students choose tools and record each object's length, weight, temperature, or travel time with units.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations where pairs measure a book's length, an apple's weight, water temperature, and a toy car's travel time.
Ask students to write which tool and unit they would choose to measure a desk, pumpkin, bowl of soup, and recess.
Play Tool Match Relay with cards showing objects, rulers, scales, thermometers, timers, and measurement units.
Have students test whether a lunchbox ice pack keeps water colder for ten minutes, recording Fahrenheit temperatures every two minutes.
