What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students help choose simple steps and tools for an investigation. They observe objects, compare length and weight, and describe visible properties. They record results with drawings, labels, or tallies.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students follow a simple plan and compare objects by lining them up or using a balance. They describe what they noticed and make a record that matches the results.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the biggest object is always the heaviest or that the longest object must weigh more. They may guess instead of testing, or compare lengths without lining up the ends.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a plastic spoon, a paper clip, and a balance. Ask, “Which is longer and which is heavier? Test both, then draw your results.”

Ways to Teach It
In pairs, students choose tools to compare a crayon, block, and spoon, then record length and weight results with drawings.
Show a large sponge and a small rock, then ask, “Which will weigh more, and what test could prove it?”
Play Observation Relay: teams inspect one object, name two visible properties, compare it with another object, and add a tally.
Run a pretend shipping station where students select the lighter package, check it on a balance, and mark the shipping sheet.
