What Students Need to Do

Students plan a fair test with classmates, naming what will change, what will be measured, and what will stay the same. They carry out repeated trials, use metric tools correctly, and measure how long each trial takes. They also select materials to build and test a device that solves a stated problem.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can identify changed, measured, and controlled variables in a planned investigation. They can follow repeatable steps, choose suitable metric tools, record accurate measurements, and calculate elapsed time. They can build, test, and improve a simple device based on test results.

Common Misconceptions

Students often change several factors at once or call every material a variable. They may choose the wrong metric tool or unit, start measuring at the ruler’s edge, or subtract times incorrectly. They may begin building without agreeing on a plan or test.

How to Assess It

Give pairs a toy car, ramp, meter stick, and stopwatch. Ask them to test how ramp height affects travel distance, name the variables, and record metric distance and elapsed time.

   Pairs change ramp height, roll a toy car, and record metric distance and elapsed time while keeping the car and release point constant.

   Students write a plan to determine which paper towel absorbs most, naming the changed factor, measurement, controls, tools, units, and steps.

   Play a tool match relay using cards for meter stick, balance, graduated cylinder, stopwatch, metric units, and sample measurements.

   Teams build a paper bridge spanning 20 centimeters, time the build, test its penny load, and revise it after comparing results.
