What Students Need to Do: Students name the factor they will change, the result they will measure, and the conditions they will keep the same. They use these variables to plan a fair investigation.
What Mastery Looks Like: For a test of how water amount affects bean plant growth, a student identifies water amount as changed and plant growth as measured. The student keeps plant type, soil, container, and light the same.
Common Misconceptions: Students may list tools and materials as variables without explaining what could change. They may change several factors at once or confuse the measured result with the factor they changed.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: You want to test whether ramp height affects how far a toy car rolls. Name the changed variable, measured variable, and two conditions to keep the same.

Lesson moves

Use toy cars, boards, and blocks to plan a ramp test, then label the changed, measured, and controlled variables.
Ask students to explain why changing ramp height and car type together makes the results hard to interpret.
Play Variable Sort with scenario cards, placing each factor under changed, measured, or kept the same.
Plan a paper towel test comparing brands by measuring milliliters absorbed while keeping sheet size and soak time constant.
