What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

With teacher guidance, students choose objects, tools, and steps for a simple investigation. They observe, compare, measure, and record length, weight, capacity, and temperature.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select a suitable tool, follow agreed steps, and record clear results. They use their data to describe an object as longer, heavier, warmer, or able to hold more.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a larger object is always heavier or a taller container always holds more. They may rely on touch instead of a thermometer or change measurement units midway.

How to Assess It

Give students two classroom objects, linking cubes, and a balance. Ask them to measure, record, and state which object is longer and heavier.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have pairs measure pencils with linking cubes, compare toy weights on a balance, and record results in a picture chart.

  2. Ask students to explain which tool they would use to compare two cups, two books, or two bowls of water.

  3. Play a tool-matching game where students pair object cards with a balance, thermometer, linking cubes, or measuring cup.

  4. Measure the classroom temperature each morning, record it on a weekly chart, and discuss suitable clothing for the day.
