What Students Need to Do: Students select a clock, stopwatch, or timer that fits the event they are testing. They start and stop it at clear points, then record elapsed time with the correct unit.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can define when timing begins and ends, use the tool correctly, and read the display accurately. The student records each result in seconds or minutes and can repeat the procedure consistently.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse clock time with elapsed time, or subtract start and stop times incorrectly. They may start the timer late, stop it early, or forget the unit. Some choose minutes for a very short event, making the measurement less useful.
How to Assess It: Give students a stopwatch and ask them to time a partner stacking ten cubes. Have them record the elapsed time and unit.

Lesson moves

Have pairs time how long an ice cube takes to melt in two locations, recording start, stop, elapsed time, and units.
Ask students to write when they would use seconds instead of minutes to time an investigation, then defend one example.
Play Timer Match by pairing event cards, such as a pencil drop or paper towel absorption, with seconds or minutes.
Time a classroom cleanup, compare results across days, and discuss how elapsed-time data could improve the routine.
