What Students Need to Do: Students decide which measurements will answer a testable question, then choose the matching tool and unit. They read scales carefully and record each result with a unit label.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given an object or liquid, a student selects the correct tool and explains the choice. The student measures in both unit systems and gets reasonable, repeatable results.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose a familiar unit rather than one that fits the quantity. They may start rulers at the edge instead of zero, misread liquid levels, confuse mass with volume, or omit unit labels.
How to Assess It: Set out a pencil, cup of water, rock, and room thermometer. Students name the best tool and unit for each, then take and label one measurement.

Lesson moves

Set up stations with string, a rock, colored water, and warm water; students choose tools, measure, and record labeled results.
Ask students to explain which tool and unit they would use to compare two cups of water, and why.
Play Tool Match: teams pair object cards with tool and unit cards, then defend one match.
Have students inspect a food package and weather report, list the measurement units, and identify what each number tells.
