What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a ruler, yardstick, scale, or thermometer for the object being measured. They read the tool and record length, weight, or temperature with the correct U.S. Customary unit.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a common object, students select a sensible tool and unit, then measure to the nearest marked interval. They measure from zero, read scale markings correctly, and label answers with inches, feet, ounces, pounds, or degrees Fahrenheit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may begin at the ruler’s edge or at 1 rather than 0. They may confuse ounces with pounds or choose a ruler when a scale is needed. They may count thermometer lines without checking the labeled intervals.
How to Assess It
- Place a pencil, a bag of ten cubes, and a cup of room-temperature water at a station. Students select tools, measure each item, and record each result with the correct unit.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations where students measure a book in inches, a bag of cubes in ounces, and water temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.
Ask students which tool and unit they would use for a desk, an apple, and bathwater, then have them explain each choice.
Play Tool Match: students draw object cards, pair each with a measurement tool and unit, then explain one choice.
Have students read a Fahrenheit weather forecast, then compare it with the outdoor temperature measured using a classroom thermometer.
