What Students Need to Do: Students observe a simple investigation and save what they notice using drawings, tally marks, numbers, or words. They record observations during or soon after the investigation.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student creates a record that matches what happened. The student can use the record to tell what was observed or measured.
Common Misconceptions: Students may draw what they expected instead of what they observed. They may also add unrelated details, change tally marks later, or confuse a prediction with a result.
How to Assess It: Place one ice cube in sunlight and one in shade. Ask students to draw both after five minutes and circle the cube that changed more.

Lesson moves

Put celery in colored water, then have students draw and label what they see before and after.
Ask, “How does your picture show what really happened?” and have partners explain one recorded detail.
Show object groups for five seconds, then students record each group with tally marks and compare their records.
Check the weather at the same time for one week, recording sun, clouds, rain, and wind on a class chart.
