What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan a fair test by choosing one factor to change, an outcome to measure, and conditions to keep the same. They carry out the test and record results consistently.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an investigation, students correctly label the independent variable, dependent variable, and constants. They explain how keeping conditions constant makes the results more reliable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often swap the independent and dependent variables. They may treat constants as outcomes, or change several factors at once and still call the test fair.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A student changes the hours of light a plant receives and measures its height after two weeks. Identify the independent variable, dependent variable, and three constants.

Ways to Teach It
Teams test paper helicopters by changing blade length, timing each fall, and keeping paper type, clip count, and drop height constant.
Write a test plan answering: What will you change, what will you measure, and what three conditions will stay the same?
Sort investigation cards into independent variable, dependent variable, or constant, then correct any card placed in the wrong group.
Analyze how a gardener could test whether fertilizer amount affects tomato plant height while keeping water, soil, pot size, and sunlight constant.
