What Students Need to Do: Students turn an observable situation into a testable question. They name the factor they will change and the result they will measure, then predict how those variables relate.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a scenario, students correctly identify the independent and dependent variables. They write a measurable, directional prediction and explain their reasoning.
Common Misconceptions: Students often swap the independent and dependent variables or name a controlled factor as one of them. They may write a guess with no measurable outcome or fail to state the direction of the relationship.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: “How does water temperature affect the time a sugar cube takes to dissolve?” Have students label both variables and write one directional hypothesis.

Lesson moves

Change the height of a toy-car ramp, measure travel distance, and have pairs write a hypothesis before collecting three trials.
Ask students to revise “Plants grow better with light” into a testable question and a hypothesis naming both variables.
Play Variable Sort with scenario cards, teams label changed and measured factors, then earn a point for a clear directional hypothesis.
