What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify a possible cause and predict its measurable effect. They write a testable hypothesis that explains what they expect to happen and why.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name what will be changed and what result will be measured. Their hypothesis links the two clearly and can be checked through an investigation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write a question, fact, or opinion instead of a prediction. They may reverse cause and effect, change several conditions, or predict a result that cannot be measured.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A student changes ramp height and measures how far a toy car travels. Write a hypothesis, underline the cause, and circle the effect.”

Ways to Teach It
Change the height of a book ramp, write a hypothesis about travel distance, then test it with a toy car and measuring tape.
Ask students to write and defend a hypothesis about how sunlight affects the growth of bean plants.
Give pairs cause and effect cards to match, then have students turn each matched pair into a testable hypothesis.
Use the school garden to predict how different amounts of water will affect plant height over one week.
