What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify a factor that might cause a measurable change. They write a testable prediction that clearly connects the cause to the expected effect.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can write an if-then-because statement for a simple investigation. The statement names what will change, what will be measured, and a scientific reason for the prediction.

Common Misconceptions

Students may write a question or a guess instead of a testable prediction. They may reverse the cause and effect or change several factors at once. Some leave out what will be measured.

How to Assess It

Give students this prompt: “How does ramp height affect the distance a toy car travels?” Ask them to write one testable if-then-because statement.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build three paper ramps at different heights, then have students predict how ramp height will affect a toy car's travel distance.

  2. Ask students to explain whether “Plants grow better near windows” is testable, then revise it into an if-then-because statement.

  3. Sort hypothesis cards into testable and not testable piles, then rewrite two weak cards with clear causes and measurable effects.

  4. Compare ice cubes placed in sun and shade, then predict how location will affect melting time and explain why.
