Knowledge and Skills in This Standard
K.MG.1 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.
- K.MG.1.a.i
lengths of two objects using the terms longer or shorter
- K.MG.1.a.ii
heights of two objects using the terms taller or shorter
- K.MG.1.a.iii
weights of two objects using the terms heavier or lighter
- K.MG.1.a.iv
volumes of two containers using the terms more or less
- K.MG.1.a.v
amount of time spent on two events using the terms longer or shorter.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students directly compare two objects by placing, lifting, filling, or observing them. They describe differences in length, height, weight, capacity, and duration with accurate comparison words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students line up, lift, pour, or observe two items or events to compare them fairly. They use the correct comparison word and explain what they noticed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare objects without lining up their ends or bases. They may assume a larger object is always heavier or a taller container always holds more. They may confuse which event started first with which event lasted longer.
How to Assess It
- At an exit station, have each child compare two ribbons, block towers, sealed bags, filled cups, and timed actions. Ask for a comparison sentence and a reason for each pair.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs ribbons, block towers, sealed bags, and clear cups, then have students compare each pair and explain their choices.
Show two containers and ask, “Which holds more, and how could we prove it?” Record students’ test plans.
Play Comparison Relay, where students draw two object cards, compare the named attribute, and say a complete comparison sentence.
Compare classroom routines, such as washing hands and putting on a coat, by timing each with a sand timer.
