What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students watch or perform two events and decide which one takes more or less time. They explain their choice by noting which event stopped first or kept going.
What Mastery Looks Like
- When two actions begin together, the student identifies the action that ends first as shorter and the action that continues as longer. The student explains the choice using what they observed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think an action that looks harder or feels more fun must take longer. They may focus on which event ends later without checking whether both started together. Some reverse longer and shorter or compare the objects instead of the time spent.
How to Assess It
- Have one child clap and another tap the table, starting together. Stop the clapper first, then ask, "Which event was shorter, and how do you know?"

Ways to Teach It
Release two toy cars together on tracks of different lengths; students point to the car whose trip lasts longer.
Prompt students, "Maya and Leo started together, but Maya stopped hopping first. Which action was shorter, and what proves it?"
Pairs draw cards such as "hop five times" and "touch toes twice," start together, then earn a point for naming the longer action.
Have two students begin packing a backpack and zipping a coat together; the class identifies which classroom routine takes longer.
