What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place two objects side by side with one end lined up. They name which object is longer or shorter and point to the endpoints as evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student lines up two objects at one end before comparing them. The student correctly names the longer and shorter object and uses the unmatched endpoint to explain.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare objects without lining up one end. They may think the object placed higher is longer or that the larger-looking object must be longer.
How to Assess It
- Give each student two paper strips of different lengths. Say, “Show which strip is longer, then explain how you know.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs of crayons, craft sticks, and ribbons; students line up one end, name the longer item, and explain their choice.
Place two pencils unevenly on a table and ask, “Which is longer, and what must we do before deciding?”
Play Longer or Shorter: partners turn over two paper-strip cards, align them, and keep the card matching the teacher’s word.
Compare two classroom shoelaces or backpack straps to decide which replacement would need more material.
