What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students directly compare the heights of two objects. They align the objects on the same surface, decide which is taller or shorter, and explain their choice.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students place two objects on the same flat surface and identify which is taller or shorter. They justify the comparison by pointing to the objects’ aligned bases and tops.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare objects from different starting points and choose the object whose top appears higher. They may also confuse taller and longer or think the larger-looking object must be taller.
How to Assess It
- Give each student two classroom objects and ask, “Which is taller, and how do you know?” Check that the student aligns their bases before answering.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two classroom objects to stand on a tray, align at the bottom, and compare by pointing to the higher top.
Show two unevenly placed blocks and ask, “Can we tell which is taller yet?” Have students explain how to fix the comparison.
Play Height Detective by having students find two objects, align their bases, and tell a partner which is taller and which is shorter.
Compare two classroom plants each week, placing them beside the same wall mark and recording which one is taller.
