Virginia SOL 1.MG.1.a.i
The Standard
lengths of two objects (units laid end to end with no gaps or overlaps) and compare the measurements using the terms longer/shorter, taller/shorter, or the same as
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will reason mathematically using nonstandard units to measure and compare objects by length, weight, and volume.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students line up equal-sized objects from one endpoint to the other without spaces or overlaps. They count the units and use comparison words to describe two lengths.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student measures from endpoint to endpoint using equal-sized units placed in a straight row. The student records accurate counts and chooses longer, shorter, taller, or the same as correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave spaces, overlap units, or begin away from the object's endpoint. They may use different-sized units, compare the unit counts backward, or call every greater measurement taller.
How to Assess It
- Give each student two pencils and connecting cubes. Ask them to measure both pencils, record the counts, and write one sentence comparing their lengths.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs linking cubes and two classroom objects; students build aligned cube trains, record each count, and state which object is longer.
Show two flawed paper-clip measurements and ask, “Which one is fair, and what must be fixed?”
Play Measure and Compare: students draw two object cards, measure both with tiles, then earn a point for a correct comparison sentence.
Have students measure two shelf spaces with craft sticks and decide which space can hold the longer book.
