The Standard
volumes of two containers and compare the measurements using the terms more, less, or the same as.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students fill two containers using the same scoop and count how many scoopfuls each holds. They compare the counts using more, less, or the same.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use the same scoop and fill it consistently for both containers. They record accurate totals and compare the amounts correctly, including when the amounts are equal.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume a taller container always holds more. They may switch scoop sizes, count partial scoops as full, or compare fill heights instead of totals.
How to Assess It
- Give students two containers, one small scoop, and rice. Have them measure each container, record the scoop totals, and write which holds more, less, or the same.

Ways to Teach It
Pairs fill two plastic containers with the same small cup of rice, tally each cupful, then label which holds more, less, or the same.
Show a tall narrow jar and a short wide tub; ask, “Which holds more, and how could we prove it?”
Play Capacity Match: students measure mystery containers with one scoop, record totals, and find a classmate whose container holds the same amount.
At a pretend café, students choose containers for small and large drinks, then verify each choice using the same scoop of water.
