What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare how much two containers can hold by filling and pouring from one to the other. They say which holds more or less and use what happens during pouring as evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student fills one container and pours its contents into another without relying only on appearance. The student correctly says which holds more or less and explains using leftover material or empty space.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume the taller or wider container always holds more. They may compare water height instead of the total amount held. Some do not recognize leftover material or empty space as proof.
How to Assess It
- Give each student two containers and dry rice. Ask, “Which container holds more, and how can you prove it by pouring?”

Ways to Teach It
Fill one container with dry rice and pour it into a second container; students use leftover rice or empty space to justify their comparison.
Show two differently shaped bottles and ask, “Which holds more, and what could we do to prove it?”
Play Capacity Challenge: pairs choose two cups, test them with water, and earn a point for a correct comparison and explanation.
At snack time, have students choose which of two cups would hold more milk, then test their choice by pouring.
