What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare two objects by holding one in each hand or placing them on a balance scale. They name which object is heavier and which is lighter, then explain what evidence supports the comparison.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given two objects with noticeably different weights, a student tests them instead of guessing from size. The student uses heavier and lighter correctly and explains the result using the balance pans.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often assume the larger or taller object must weigh more. They may judge by sight instead of handling the objects. Some read a balance backward and call the object on the higher pan heavier.
How to Assess It
- Give each child a rock and a cotton ball. Ask, “Which is heavier, which is lighter, and how do you know?”

Ways to Teach It
Pairs place classroom objects on a balance scale, name the heavier and lighter object, and explain what the pans show.
Show a large sponge and small wooden block, then ask, “Which will be heavier, and what test could prove your answer?”
Play Weight Match-Up by having students draw two object cards, compare the objects, and earn a point for a correct explanation.
Students compare two packed lunch bags and discuss how weight affects which bag is easier to carry.
