What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find how many whole hours pass between a given starting time and ending time. They count forward on a clock or timeline within the same a.m. or p.m. period.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student correctly finds the number of whole hours between two times in the same a.m. or p.m. period. The student can show the count using a clock, timeline, or subtraction equation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count both the starting and ending hour, giving 6 hours from 3:00 to 8:00 instead of 5. They may count backward or confuse elapsed time with the ending time.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “Soccer practice starts at 3:00 p.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m. How long is practice? Show your thinking.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs two teaching clocks, set start and end times, then have students move one hour at a time and record each move.

  2. Ask, “Why is the time from 2:00 to 6:00 four hours, not five?” Students explain with words and a timeline.

  3. Play Time Match by having students pair start-and-end time cards with the correct elapsed-time card.

  4. Use a class schedule to find how many whole hours pass between morning arrival and lunch or between lunch and dismissal.
