What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find how many whole hours pass between a starting time and an ending time. They count forward on a clock or timeline within one 12-hour period.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students count forward by hours from the starting time until they reach the ending time. They handle the change from 12 to 1 and label the elapsed time in hours.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count both the starting and ending hours, giving an answer that is one hour too many. They may also struggle when counting past 12 or assume the minutes change.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Practice begins at 9:20 a.m. and ends at 12:20 p.m. How many hours does it last? Show your counting.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two geared clocks to model start and end times, then count each one-hour move between them.
Ask students to explain why an event from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. lasts three hours, not nine.
Play Time Match by pairing event cards showing start and end times with cards showing the correct elapsed hours.
Use a school day schedule and have students find how many hours pass between arrival, lunch, specials, and dismissal.
