What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a starting time and a duration to find when an event ends. They solve one-step and multistep problems, including times that cross from a.m. to p.m.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly find ending times for events that stay within a.m. or p.m. and events that cross noon. They show hour and minute jumps and label the answer a.m. or p.m.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat minutes like base ten, writing 10:45 plus 30 minutes as 10:75. They may forget to change a.m. to p.m. when passing noon or skip one duration in a multistep problem.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Practice starts at 10:45 a.m. and lasts 1 hour 50 minutes. When does it end? Show your time jumps.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs analog clocks, start-time cards, and duration cards, then have them move the hands to find each ending time.
Ask students to explain why an event starting at 11:40 a.m. and lasting 45 minutes ends after noon.
Play Time Jump Relay, where teams add duration cards to a starting time and record each new ending time.
Use a movie schedule and travel time to find when a family arrives home after the movie and drive.
