What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify people and groups who lived in Virginia long ago and describe what they contributed. They recognize historical events, stories, and legends, then explain how communities and places change over time.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can match farmers, traders, Indigenous people, settlers, women, children, and leaders with their contributions. They can compare past and present pictures and name one clear change.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think Indigenous communities existed only in the past or that only famous men shaped communities. They may also treat every legend as a fully factual account.

How to Assess It

Show three picture cards and ask each student to name a contributor, explain one contribution, and identify one way the pictured place changed over time.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs old and new Virginia photos to sort, then build one changed place with blocks and label what changed.

  2. Read a Virginia legend and ask, “Which parts may be true, and which parts may have been added to the story?”

  3. Play a matching game with picture cards showing farmers, traders, leaders, women, children, and Indigenous people beside their contributions.

  4. Walk around the school grounds, compare them with an older photo, and invite a longtime staff member to explain one change.
