What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name people and groups who helped communities long ago. They describe how someone contributed through food, trade, shelter, leadership, work, or community change.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a picture or short story, students identify who is shown and explain one contribution. They recognize that Indigenous people, women, children, and other often overlooked groups shaped communities.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all leaders were presidents or adult men, or that only famous inventions count as contributions. They may treat Indigenous tribes as one group or confuse the roles of farmers, traders, and settlers.
How to Assess It
- Show three picture cards from a studied community. Ask each student to choose one and answer, “Who is this, and how did this person or group help?”

Ways to Teach It
Use blocks and labeled figures to build an early community, then explain how each person provided food, goods, shelter, work, or leadership.
Read a picture biography, then ask, “What problem did this person notice, and what did they do to help?”
Match picture cards showing farmers, traders, settlers, leaders, women, children, and members of a named Indigenous tribe with their contributions.
Study a local historical marker or museum webpage, then name the community member it honors and one way that person helped.
