What Students Need to Do

Students identify major people from United States history and tell what each person did. They explain how an invention, exploration, public action, or leadership choice changed life for others.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can match a person to an accurate contribution and explain the result using cause and effect. The student can compare two people, such as Rosa Parks and Jackie Robinson, without treating their work as the same.

Common Misconceptions

Students often mix up inventors, such as assigning the telephone to Thomas Edison instead of Alexander Graham Bell. They may call Rosa Parks “the bus lady” or Jackie Robinson “a baseball player” without naming the barriers each person challenged.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose Benjamin Franklin, Sacagawea, Rosa Parks, or Mary Jackson. Write what the person did and complete, “This changed life because...”

   Give pairs picture cards, contribution cards, and impact cards for six figures to match, then ask them to explain one completed set.

   Ask, “Which changemaker showed the most courage?” Students name one action as evidence in a four-sentence response.

   Play clue bingo with names on boards and teacher clues such as “developed a polio vaccine” or “walked on the moon.”

4. 04

   Have students find one school or home tool linked to an inventor, then draw how life might differ without it.
