What Students Need to Do: Students name each changemaker and describe a specific role or achievement. They explain how each person helped people explore land, air, or space.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students connect Lewis and Clark with mapping western lands, Sacagawea with interpreting and assisting the expedition, Armstrong with walking on the Moon, and Earhart with aviation records. They give an accurate detail about why each contribution mattered.
Common Misconceptions: Students may claim Lewis and Clark discovered empty land, ignoring the Indigenous nations already living there. They may describe Sacagawea only as a guide. They may confuse Armstrong with the first person in space or Earhart with the first woman to fly.
How to Assess It: Give students five name cards and five achievement cards to match. Ask them to explain two matches aloud using a complete sentence.

Lesson moves

Place name cards on a floor map, then trace expedition routes, Earhart’s flights, and Armstrong’s Moon mission with colored string.
Ask students to write which changemaker faced the hardest problem and support their choice with one fact.
Play Who Am I using clue cards about each person’s role, tools, location, and achievement.
Compare the tools these changemakers used with GPS, airplanes, translation apps, and spacecraft used now.
