2.5 is a Standards of Learning history and social science standard. These are the skills expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students locate Indigenous nations of the Eastern Woodlands, Plains, and Southwest on a map. They connect each nation’s environment and resources to ways of life and contributions. They explain that tribal nations have their own governments and maintain living cultures today.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a map and source cards, a student correctly places examples from each region. The student uses evidence to connect land and resources with cultural practices. The student names a present-day contribution and explains tribal sovereignty as a nation’s right to govern itself.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat all Indigenous peoples as one group or assume they lived only in the past. They may think every nation in a region has the same homes, foods, and customs. They may think sovereignty means tribal nations have no relationship with state or federal governments.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose one nation studied, mark its region on a U.S. map, name one resource use and one contribution, then finish, “Tribal sovereignty means...”

   Give pairs a U.S. map and labeled picture cards, then have them match nations, regions, resources, and contributions and explain each choice.

   Show two source images from different nations and ask, “What does each image show about land, culture, or life today?”

   Play a clue-card game where teams identify the nation or region, then cite the map, resource, or contribution clue that proves it.

   Visit an official tribal nation website and have students find one current government service, cultural program, or community contribution.
