What Students Need to Do: Students name events, stories, and legends from the past. They tell one detail that shows who was involved or what happened.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can identify a familiar example when shown a picture or given a short description. The student can explain the example in simple words without confusing it with a present-day event.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every old story is fully true, or that all stories are made up. They may name a holiday, person, or object without telling the past event or story connected to it.
How to Assess It: Show three pictures linked to familiar examples from the past. Ask each student to choose one, name the event, story, or legend, and tell one detail.

Lesson moves

Place picture cards on labeled mats for event, story, and legend, then have students explain each choice to a partner.
Ask students to draw a past event, story, or legend and dictate one sentence about what happened.
Play Which Is It by reading short examples while students hold up event, story, or legend cards.
Show a local monument photo, read its plaque aloud, and ask what past event or story it helps people remember.
