What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name people from the community’s past and present. They tell how each person helped the community begin, grow, or solve problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify a local person from a photo or name. The student can describe one contribution using a clear sentence or drawing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name presidents or fictional characters instead of local people. They may think only mayors are leaders or confuse a person’s job with that person’s contribution.
How to Assess It
- Show two pictures of local people. Ask, “Who is one person shown, and how did that person help our community?”
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Place printed photos of local founders and leaders on a floor timeline, then attach picture cards showing what each person did.
Ask, “Who helped our community, and what changed because of that person?” Record each child’s answer on a class chart.
Play a matching game with local person cards and contribution cards, such as starting a school, leading the town, or organizing services.
Open the town or county website, find one current leader, and make a class caption naming the person’s job.
