What Students Need to Do: Students identify people from the community’s past and describe how they helped shape local life. They tell each person’s story in a clear order using pictures, words, or both.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students name a local person and explain that person’s contribution. They use accurate details and sequence events with words such as first, next, and last.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think only presidents or celebrities helped communities grow. They may name a person’s job without explaining the person’s impact. They may mix invented details with known facts.
How to Assess It: Show a photo of a person studied in class. Ask each student: Who is this, what did this person do, and why is that remembered?

Lesson moves

Build a class timeline with printed photos of three local people, then add picture cards showing what each person contributed.
Ask: Who helped shape our community, what did that person do, and how can we tell the story in order?
Play a matching game that pairs each local person’s photo with a place, object, or action linked to that person.
Visit a nearby marker or view one online, then have students explain why the person named there is remembered.
