What Students Need to Do: Students compare pictures of the same location from two different times. They identify what is different, what stayed the same, and use picture clues to explain their thinking.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can point out a clear difference between an older and newer picture of a familiar place. The student can describe the evidence using words such as before, now, changed, and stayed the same.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every difference in two pictures shows change over time, even when the pictures show different locations. They may also assume that newer buildings, roads, or parks appeared all at once.
How to Assess It: Show two dated pictures of the school or neighborhood. Ask, "Name one thing that changed and one thing that stayed the same. What clues helped you?"

Lesson moves

Give pairs two photos of the same place, then have them sort sticky notes under changed or stayed the same.
Ask students to draw their classroom now and predict how it might look many years later.
Play Same or Changed by showing picture pairs and having students hold up matching response cards.
Take a short school walk and compare current features with an older school photo, such as trees, playground equipment, or entrances.
