What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students work out unfamiliar and multiple-meaning words by using context, sentence structure, word parts, word relationships, and reference tools. They explain figurative language and use newly learned words accurately in discussions and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select a word meaning that fits the passage and explain which context clue, sentence pattern, root, affix, or reference source helped. They explain figurative phrases and use new words accurately in speaking and writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students often choose the first dictionary definition instead of the meaning that fits the sentence. They may treat figurative language literally, assume synonyms are interchangeable, or guess a word’s meaning from only one word part.

How to Assess It

Give students a four-sentence passage with one unfamiliar word and one figurative phrase. Ask them to define both, mark supporting clues, and use the new word in another sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort prefix, root, and suffix cards into possible words, predict each meaning, then check the predictions in a print or digital dictionary.

  2. Discuss whether “The hallway was a zoo” is literal or figurative, then write a metaphor, simile, hyperbole, and personification example.

  3. Play a context clue relay where teams match multiple-meaning words to sentences and explain why each meaning fits.

  4. Bring in a food label or weather report, identify specialized words, check their origins and pronunciations, then explain them in plain language.
