What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use dictionaries, glossaries, etymology sources, and reliable digital tools to research unfamiliar words. They find each word’s origin, formation, and pronunciation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select an appropriate reference and locate the needed information without help. They explain a word’s origin and formation, then pronounce it using a key or audio model.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse a word’s origin with its definition or treat syllable breaks as derivation. They may guess pronunciation from spelling or trust the first website they find.
How to Assess It
- Give students the word geothermal and access to print and digital references. Ask them to record its origin, word parts, pronunciation, and sources.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations with a print dictionary, etymology dictionary, science glossary, and tablet; students complete a source card for one word.
Ask students to compare two entries for virus and write which source best shows origin, word formation, and pronunciation.
Run a reference relay where teams draw word cards and earn points for finding origin, derivation, pronunciation, and the source used.
Students choose a term from a medicine label or device manual, then create a pronunciation and word-origin note for a class glossary.
