What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use dictionaries, pronunciation guides, and etymology sources in print and online. They find how a word is pronounced, where it came from, which words developed from it, and how it functions in a sentence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select a suitable print or digital source and locate each requested detail accurately. They can read pronunciation symbols or audio guides, explain a word’s origin, identify related forms, and name its grammatical role.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may stop after finding a definition or assume every website gives complete, reliable information. They often confuse a word’s origin with its related forms. They may also mistake a grammar label for part of the pronunciation guide.
How to Assess It
- Give students the word “benevolent.” Using a dictionary and an etymology source, they record its pronunciation, origin, one related form, and part of speech.

Ways to Teach It
Set out print dictionaries and tablets; pairs complete a four column scavenger hunt for pronunciation, origin, related forms, and grammar labels.
Ask how knowing that biology contains Greek roots clarifies its meaning; students write a claim supported by two reference entries.
Play Reference Relay: teams draw word cards, locate four requested details, and earn a point only when they name the source used.
Students inspect medicine labels or job postings, then use reference tools to explain one specialized term and its word family.
