What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use print or digital reference tools to find the correct spelling of a word. They use alphabetical order and guide words to locate entries, then revise their writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students independently locate a word and confirm every letter in its spelling. They choose the entry that matches the word used in the sentence and make an accurate correction.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may search only under the first letter and ignore later letters. They may choose the first similar-looking entry without checking that it fits the sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give students the sentence, “The rabit hid under the fense.” Ask them to use a classroom dictionary to correct both misspelled words.
